Morandis Magic Box, 1971
Acrylic on Canvas
67 x 67 in
“Morandi’s Magic Box” is a painting I made in 1971. The central form is borrowed from the Georgio Morandi Metaphysical Still Life with Triangle, which features a mysterious box-form whose interior geometry contradicts the exterior structure portrayed in soft ochre tonalities. (The usual Morandi calm is present) I decided to energize that visual conundrum by surrounding it with a loud color scheme of rotating planes. During that process small portals began to appear alongside the box suggesting another dimension behind it. (A pattern of various colors defines each portal) This composition seemed to create itself. That is why I placed the word “magic” in the title.
